Jamie Vardy opens with its subject waiting to be interviewed for the documentary. He asks if, before he starts speaking, someone could fetch him a beer.
A bottle duly arrives. Then, with a glint of mischief, he says there’s just one other thing — could someone fetch his bottle opener. It’s the wooden thing. He’s suppressing titters when the poor member of the production team comes back, for the shaft of the opener is actually a large, carved phallus.
It’s at that point you know the next hour and a half is going to capture Vardy pretty well — and sure enough it delivers. Football documentaries are booming and the field is becoming increasingly crowded but a film about one of the modern game’s most gritty and improbable stars? To borrow from Jerry Maguire, you had me at novelty phallic utensil.
